Editor's Opinion : Inside story of Defectors (Dal Badlu)

It has become a fashion in contemporary politics for a political leader to jump to another party from the parent party for the personal benefits. Every time the excuse of Public Interest is made by those defectors (Dal Badlu) in order to advocate their decision. Moreover, they also start feeling the regard in new party which they were missing in their parent party. Some defectors might have forgotten their parent party after traveling in the various political parties.

The Political parties that welcome such defectors, feel privileged and tries to publicize the news with a chest of 56 inch as if they have done a marvelous job. Defection is an anti-democratic process, against which the Parliament had also passed a legislation, Anti-Defection Law. Though this law is applicable on the elected legislators of a party but it gives a message to other leaders also that Politics is not a business of personal gains.

In contemporary politics, defection is taken as a gain and many political leaders can be seen importing defectors by honouring them with a Siropao (religious cloth) which is given as a medal to the defectors in order to encourage them. Moreover, many political leaders can be seen claiming that more MLAs or leaders of opposition party have agreed to join their party.

The question arises, what is the purpose for an MLA or a leader to change the party when he or she can do same social service remaining in the parent party. Exceptions are always there when it is good to leave a party which get derailed from the original agenda. But, a trend has been witnessed from last few years, the political leaders are changing their parties because their party hadn't came into power. Many excuses can be made by the defectors, but in real sense personal gain is the only reason to change the party. Even monetary or power promises persuade a defector to change a party.

An MLA resigns and join another party putting a burden on the people to bear the cost of by-election. General Public must teach a lesson to such defectors by giving them a soundly defeat. One such by-election will be held soon.

This trend can be fatal for Indian Democracy. People must give a message to politicians that such moves do not entertain them.
